Ghost of Yotei: How to Drink Sake
Drinking sake is a great way to recover Spirit in Ghost of Yotei, allowing players to replenish this useful resource without having to set up a tent or fight enemies. Additionally, some quests and hidden objectives require Atsu to be drunk before they can be completed.
While the game does tell players how to drink sake the first time the item is obtained, the tooltip is easy to miss, and players need to dig through some menus to find the relevant tutorial entry the second time. Luckily, the process is fairly simple. Here’s how it works.

How to Drink Sake in Ghost of Yotei
Hold down on the D-Pad to drink sake in Ghost of Yotei. As long as you have some in your inventory, Atsu will immediately chug a jarful. Doing so recovers 1 to 2 Spirit and makes Atsu drunk.
When drunk, the world becomes blurry and out of focus, with a swaying animation that makes it feel like everything is tilting on an axis. Drinking another sake immediately after the first one will amplify this effect (and restore Spirit). Drinking a third one will trigger a vomiting animation and make the screen so blurry that you will not be able to see anything other than gray.
By default, Atsu can hold 2 sake jars at one time. Trying to pick up and carry more will give you an error. You can check how much sake you have left in the Inventory menu under Resources.
Sake is a one-time consumable item. Once you drink it, you need to find another one to drink again.
After you drink a cup of sake, you’ll be left with an empty sake jar, either in Atsu’s hand or on the ground. This container cannot be filled with more sake and has no use beyond being thrown as a means of distracting enemies to pull off sneak attacks or to stagger foes.
One of Ghost of Yotei’s trophies, Wolf Bait, requires triggering a wolf kill using an empty sake jar.
Snake Skin Armor Sake Buffs
The Snake Skin Armor offers some sake-related buffs that can come in quite handy during the early game. It is exclusively available to players who have purchased Ghost of Yotei’s Digital Deluxe Edition. When worn, it has the following effects:
- Empty sake jars have a chance of actually being full when picked up.
- Thrown sake jars explode on impact and create a poisonous cloud.
How to Get Sake in Ghost of Yotei
Sake can be found in campsites, houses, or outposts in Ghost of Yotei. Basically, anywhere there is civilization, Atsu has a chance to stumble upon some sake. In enemy camps, you will often find empty sake jars. As mentioned before, these containers do not have sake unless you’re wearing the Snake Skin Armor.
Alternatively, Atsu can also purchase sake from vendors in Ainu camps and major hubs. Sake costs 10 copper per jar, and merchants typically have three in stock at a time. This stock refreshes over time, so you can always come back for more later.
